A Very Vintage Valentine's..

We know that Valentine's is a wonderful time of year if you are happily married, dating, courting, or ... whatever else you want call it with your sweetheart! And we here at Secret Vintage HQ would like to wish you all a very happy and loved up weekend!

But fret not if you don't have a beau to hand this Valentine's and feel you are missing out, try to ignore the obscene amounts of mass produced tacky cards, chocolates and gifts that the shops have on display right now and focus your energies on meeting that Mr or Mrs Right - having an idea of that person in mind may well help to attract them into your life!

To help you in your quest, we thought we'd take a look at the evolution of the typical Valentine's Card throughout the eras...but first if you have the ability, make sure you listen to our Specially selected Valentine's playlist on Youtube! Click here and listen whilst you view the below- it will heighten the experience! :)

1930s cards saw the rise in popularity of cheeky slogans and puns

1950s

The pin up girl, having been around since pre 1920s saw a rise in popularity with glamour models such as Maryln Munroe taking to the silver screen in the 1950s.

1960s

Cards focused heavily on the technology easily available at the time, such as Vespas, and Televisions!

1970/80s

Comics were popular which gave rise to the use of characters in Valentine's Cards

And I think we'll leave it there for now before we get into the realms of cards featuring Sonic the Hedgehog from the 1990s! So here's to wish you a very Happy Valentine's for 2014. We'll leave you with a lovely image from the first ever Secret Vintage Fair Calendar- taken at Memoirs Restaurant and Cocktail Bar. There's still a few for sale with 100% of the proceeds going to St Helena Hospice, visit Lesley's Girls Vintage in GO4 Market Cafe, Trinity St, Colchester, if you would like to purchase one, or contact us and we'll post you one out!
